We say goodbye to the Gladiator Games with its 12th and final anniversary. Europe’s first and longest lasting freestyle motocross event is put into the books as one of the most successful events in the history of the sport. What’s more important is that it has brought riders together from around the world into a clash of continents. The energy in the arena has always been epic and the parties miraculous. The event may be at an end, but the friendships developed here will last a lifetime.
In 2000, the Gladiator Games was the first event in Europe that invited US stars to compete in an FMX contest. Edgar Torronteras was the mad dog of FMX and the only rider from Europe able to compete with the US riders. The local Petr Kuchar just began with his FMX career and later became the first Euro rider to flip and was marked 5 or so in the world. Since the creation of the event, Petr Kuchar has missed out only 1 Gladiator Games in Prague due to injury. Sitting next to Edgar in the stand during practice, it was funny to point out, that he has attended the first and last of the events. It was great to close it up that way.
Highlights during the years:
- 2003 – Jeff Fehr back flip
- 2005 – Petr Pilat sets World Record as youngers rider to do a back flip
- 2006 – Quad, Snowmobile and MX bike flip
- 2009 – Harley Flip
- 2009 – Tandem Flip with Petr Pilat and Pavel Bem (Major of Prague)
- 2011 – 32m ramp in Arena
- 2011 – Tandem Flip on Snow mobile (Moore brothers)
- 2011 – Car Jump – Marek Rejman Finishes off the show with a 12m jump in a Fiat Punto and says goodbye.
Innovations that inspired events to come
- Freestyle on multiple machines in one arena
- Scaffolding landings with dirt cover to save space in arena and increase landing size
- Combination of extreme sports with theatrical entertainment
The Gladiator Games is the only event in the world that holds a warm up party and the promoters really wants you to ride safe as the motto of the event has always been. “make sure you make it to the after party”. Other than 2 incidents throughout the years, its always been that way.
A big thank you goes out to Marek Rejman, for all his years and dedication to putting on what will be remembered as one of the best events in freestyle motocross history, the FMX Gladiator Games. We are happy to have been a part of it.
